Vintage Red Wing's

Our friend John from Canada sent me an offer I couldn't refuse: He had this vintage pair of Red Wing Irish Setter's for sale (in my size: US10.5). According to John the shoes are in a near mint shape - pretty remarkable for a pair that probably dates back to the 1950's. Gabor, European GM at Red Wing, was surprised to see the instep cap which reminds us of a golf shoe. Any one of you ever seen a detail like this on a pair RW shoes? More Red Wing news through Dyed in Red.

Instep cap? You mean the kilties?
Hardly a 'golfshoe' thing. Plenty of work boots got 'em. I think they were meant to keep branches and twigs from snagging the bootlaces.(?)
Check out Whites, Wesco, etc.

You are right. But our friends at RW tell us this can not be original. According to them it is something that the former owner might have added himself. Would that be possible?
